Conversations with Single Mothers of Color

Do you watch NBC’s Parenthood? If so, you may’ve caught last night’s episode, in which interracial newlyweds, Crosby and Jasmine, bicker over how to address the use of the N-word (which their seven-year-old son Jabbar first heard in his white dad’s custody).

The episode gingerly, irritatingly, but ultimately satisfyingly tackled an elephant whose presence in a room is difficult for some parents of biracial children to adequately explain.

Since Jasmine was a single parent to Jabbar for the first five years of his life (without notifying Crosby of his existence), she has far more experience with parenting in general than he does. This was on display in last night’s episode, as she aptly explained some of the struggles she and Jabbar may face that Crosby has been insulated against.
